Cotswolds Gatehouse
CLIENT TESTIMONIAL
“After a taxing and oft’ sad life I have always dreamed of one day creating a legacy property, so peaceful, timeless and rich in character that for my children and all who visit it will feel special. Our inspiration has always been the countryside of England and Scotland and the indelible imprint that the stone cottages and fences and history left within us.
Creating in North America the old world European stone home and property felt elusive until I met Steve. I felt that he not only opened his mind to my vision, but at the heart of him there rests this fierce passion for the timeless artisanship of stone masonry. He spent hours scouring the countryside for the perfect rubble rock, constantly in close communication and was timely sourcing product.
Researching the historical period and nuances of the stone masonry we were choosing, showing us his beautiful home, exchanging pictures, mocking up sample walls and drystone walls were all included in the planning process. When on site completing the first out building on the property Steve and his crew were efficient, neat, hard working and absolutely committed to the client’s goals. The result isn’t just a building, its become in it’s short lifetime a local landmark with people stopping multiple times a day and travelling miles to take photos and ask if we were restoring a historical building.
The first time I saw the building I got out of my vehicle and walked the last half mile to take it in. It actually made me cry. It is such a lovely building and for the first time my life; something I asked for was perfectly crafted. The attention to detail, hard chiselled and crafted elements, the old rope knots at the foundation, the mortar and perfectly imperfect aged appearance makes it impossible to know it is a new building.
Already for all who pass by it is startling unique and beautiful (excellent for slowing traffic and meeting neighbours). Although the cost of this detail will exceed the cost of other siding materials — I would reduce square footage and sacrifice other things long before I would do without the stone. It defines this property.
Steve is unique among masons and is going to walk beside us as we try to build a homestead and something that truly matters. I could not recommend a craftsman or artisan more highly.”
